Staff and young people from Wac Arts had a lovely evening at the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards – 3 of our young people and one of our staff members were recipients of Jack Petchey Achievement Awards. Almost 2,000 schools, colleges and youth organisations throughout London and Essex run the scheme, which contributes millions of pounds each year. The scheme is a reward and recognition initiative which enables schools and youth organisations to celebrate the achievements of their young people as well as receive additional funding.
Our gang were presented with their medals at the Camden Centre – it was a wonderful evening with lots of other other clubs in attendance and some well deserved winners. Each year 9 young people and one leader can win the awards, and they all receive generous funding from the wonderful Jack Petchey Foundation, which can be spent on their specific programme, equipment or even exciting trips and activities. Junior Wac Arts students were treated to a visit to the theatre to see ‘Wicked’, and the buddy group enjoyed a trip to the cinema followed by pizza for all. Other winners have bought musical instruments, art resources or even spent it on a trip to the beach! It’s a wonderful scheme and supports confidence building in our young people – it’s made all the more rewarding by the fact that the winners are nominated by their peer groups.
Head of Enrichment Steve Medlin, “The achievement awards were a fantastic chance to recognise the hard work our young people put in throughout the year. It’s great to see them be able to spend the award money in fun and rewarding ways.”
