Wac Arts has officially launched Artists in Residence… Wac Arts AIR!

Wac Arts, in its 35 years of providing inclusive and affordable arts training to young people from 33 boroughs of London, has always provided a support network to students once they have left. Whether providing rehearsal space, loaning equipment, offering training and work opportunities or networking events to its alumni, Wac Arts strives to help in any way it can. Realising we have already been housing artists in residence, we recognised the potential for emerging artists, alumni, students and the community.

At least four artists a year will exhibit their work at Wac Arts and this will not always be in the form of art exhibitions. With interest already coming in from practitioners to provide workshops, master classes, talks and performances, this really is a fantastic opportunity for the local community to come inside the town hall and appreciate the talents of our alumni and other emerging artists. Artists will also be working with students on various projects that will be available for the public to see at set sharing and events throughout the year.

Full event details will be available on this page and also via email. If you would like to join our Wac Arts AIR mailing list, please email Hayley.Butler@WacArts.co.uk.

The Launch

We launch with two artists in residence. Peter Anderson will be displaying his work in the Townhall’s Atrium for two months from the 16th May and Che Walker will be using our studio space whilst he devises and creates a new theatre piece.

Having attended Wac Arts, Che Walker has now been teaching with us for 22 years whilst also building a successful career as a professional actor, writer and producer. Che has been an unofficial artist in residence since he left. Wac Arts has supported his professional development by ensuring he has rehearsal space when needed. Che gives back to Wac Arts by hosting regular fundraising performance nights called Dalston/ Bush Revolution. Che has raised over £5000 for Wac Arts and became our first Gold Wac Arts Backer. To read more about Che and hear what he has to say about Wac Arts go here.

Visual artist, Peter Anderson, moves into the space on 16th May until the 30th June 2014. Peter is a graduate of Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. Dedicating himself to dance, comedy and art, he has created award winning dance theatre pieces, critically acclaimed choreographies and many art gallery exhibitions. Peter was the artistic programme designer for the National Iceland Dance Company for five years.

Entitled Verve, this exhibition is a selection of inspiring and thought provoking oil and acrylic canvas paintings. The exhibition will be open to the public every Thursday evening 6pm-8pm.
